It was certainly was an unforgettable experiences for me as such being the first place to kickstart my career in construction industry. My 12 weeks of Internship tenure has surely build a strong foundation for me in preparing myself with the dynamic scene of construction industry.

Sneak peek of my Internship experiences compiled in a video

01

Company

The company that I was Interning at was Malaysia Land Development Company Berhad which also known as MLDC Berhad. This company is a Project Developer company which has its own In-house team of Consultants and Contractors

Currently, this company’s projecy biggest priority is at Genting View Resort, Genting Highlands which is a 9 storey building that commenced since 2019 and now almost reached its completion date which is by the early of 2024.

02

Supervisors

I was assigned to Contracts and Procurements team which under the supervision of my Senior Executive of Contracts, Miss Kylene Wee and also watched closely by the Chief of Staff of the company itself, Mr Tong Gui Shuen as he involved a lot in Contract Budget and Procurements

I was glad that everyone in my team and supervisors gives their full support and encouragement to me. When there’s a problems arises, I can always refer to anyone inside the department without any doubt. This unconciously not only help me to adapt more into the work environment, but also help me to enhance my technical skills

Site Visit

Besides doing the QS work in the office, I was also oftenly sent to construction site to supervise all the measurement and quality of the building.

One of the main work was when I was assigned to find out the Bechmark Analysis Rate which they use to determine the efficiency of the labour output daily. The trick is I need to extract 20,000 rows of the data that was recorded by Site Engineers since the start of the project to translate them into Ringgit per unit. For example, this Precast Lintel took about 333 Mandays to complete them which cause about RM 45.86 per meter run.

04

Task

  • Prepare the Benchmark Analysis Report for Site Worker Daily Work Done to determine labour output

  • Monitor Project Costs and Man days incurred for (Architectural/Structural/M&E) aspects throughout the construction process to obtain Benchmark Efficiency percentage

  • Ensuring progress work on-site tally with the Primary Data Measurement QTY

  • Being on-site to check the quantity of the claims and materials

  • Letter of Award preparation for the Subcontractors

  • Preparing Variation Order and Work Order documents

  • Ensure expenditures remain within budget

  • Prepare the certificate for Sub-con claims

Reflection

This internship has provided me with a profound understanding of the intricacies of Quantity Surveying as being one of the key players inside a Construction Project. Being week-in, week-out from the office to site has been an eye-opening experiences for me as I get to embrace the different working culture in this industry

As I move forward in my career, I will carry the lessons learned here and the values instilled by this company. I am confident that the skills and knowledge I have gained during my internship will serve as a strong foundation for my future endeavors. Thank you once again for everything, and I wish the company success in all your future projects.
